MARCHING BAND
The Jaguar Marching Band operates during the fall semester from August through the beginning of November. Marching band is open to all members and performances include halftime at football games and marching contests. Marching band is a physical activity and requires a significant time commitment. Students will have early morning rehearsals as well as a weekly evening rehearsal. Attendance is required to all rehearsals and performances.
WIND ENSEMBLE Director: Mrs. Taylor
Open to grades 9-12 through audition, the Wind Ensemble is the top performing concert band at Westmoore High School. The band performs college level literature at concerts and contests during the school year. Wind Ensemble members are required to attend sectionals outside of school time each week and are encouraged to take private lessons. Because these students are serious about improving their musical skills, many of them have invested in professional quality musical instruments. The Wind Ensemble performs on all concerts and will compete at OSSAA State Concert Contest. They often participate in a music festival each spring competing against the best concert bands from across the nation.
SYMPHONIC BAND Director: Mr. Smith
Open to grades 10-12, the Symphonic Band performs high school level concert band literature. A considerable amount of time is spent in class on technical exercises in order to improve the musical abilities of these students. There are minimal outside-of-school sectionals required of students in this band. Members of Symphonic Band are highly encouraged to participate in a private lesson program. The Symphonic Band performs on all concerts and will compete at OSSAA State Concert Contest. Like the Wind Ensemble, they often participate in a music festival each spring. The Symphonic Band serves for many students as a preparation for the higher-level band.
CONCERT BAND Director: Mrs. Taylor
The Freshman Band is a dedicated 9th grade ensemble that provides a smooth transition from junior high to high school band. Technical, tonal, and musical skills are developed to the next level. The Freshman Band performs on all concerts and will compete at OSSAA State Concert Contest. Like the Wind Ensemble, they often participate in a music festival each spring. Freshman Band members will continue the next year to either the Symphonic Band or Wind Ensemble
JAZZ BAND Director: Mrs. Taylor/Mr. Chai
The Jazz Band is another ensemble that we offer. We play at various concerts for the parents throughout the year as well as jazz contests and festivals. Jazz band allows the students to experience a different type of music in which there is more room for creative expression through improvisation.
COLOR GUARD Director: Abby Franke and Jess Markwell, Mikky Hellstern
The color guard is an extremely important part of the marching band as it greatly adds to its visual and aesthetic appeal to an audience. They hold all of the same requirements and responsibilities as any other band member and will serve as part of the band in the spring.
